Declan didn't give it to me. He put it on the bar between us like a dare. “Passcode's your birthday,” he said. “He thought that was funny.”
The newest draft was from the night of the crash. It said: “Don't let Dec—” and nothing else.
I looked up. Declan was looking at me like he'd read it a hundred times. Like he'd been waiting two years for me to read it too.
The older drafts weren't warnings. They were about me. What I was like. What I'd hate. What I'd pretend not to want. Theo had been introducing us for two years.
“So why ‘Don't Answer’?” I asked. Declan finally looked away. “Because I told him I'd end up in love with you. And he believed me.”
Then my phone buzzed. Unknown number. Not Declan's. The message said: “He's lying about the promise.”
